For as long as recent memory serves, the personal
computer, or desktops as they are commonly known as, have been at the core of
all computing needs and took technological innovations to a whole new level.
But there has risen a new rival to challenge the might of this giant and it is
known as the tablet.
Differences
A tablet is a hand-held device which has recently
entered the computing scenario. They are enabled but have the option of using
keyboards as an additional extension. The PC comprises of three main
components-the screen, the keyboard and the mouse. Tablets mean that one has to
spend much lesser on these components as they merge them into one single
device.
Are we nearing the end of the PC Era?
Apple iPads followed by the Samsung tablet price have steadily began a
revolution in terms of touch screen usage. There has been a steady rise in the
number of tablets sold each year and the sale of PCs has at the same time gone
down drastically. Earlier the battle took place between Microsoft’s Windows and
Apple’s Mac OS but the new war seems to be taking place between iOS and
Android. There are multiple reasons as to why tablets seem to be increasing in
popularity.
Tablets, nowadays, are able to perform the various
daily tasks and functions that are required by people all around the world. In
fact, sometimes it is easier to use a tablet for those tasks than a PC. A
person’s finger is better accustomed to the navigating tool than a mouse at any
given point of time. Tablets also have the added advantage of portability.
Laptops are obviously bought for their portability but tablets perform better
in that department as well due to the lesser bulk. The slowly declining mobile
price in India has also led to more and more people opting to go for touch screen
devices, which in turn has given the Tablet PC a new lease of life.
Another major factor that goes against the PCs, Macs
and other such computing devices is the variety that is on offer. A layman does
tend to get confused as to which piece of hardware will suit his needs and his
budget. Many people are unable to distinguish exactly between an ultrabook,
netbook and laptop. Tablets pose no such threat to potential customers as they
come in the same basic shape. All that changes, is the hardware beneath the hood.
The popularity of the touchscreen is also a major
contributing point for the success of the tablets. In fact, the latest Windows
8 may end up harming the PC industry instead of revitalizing it, as it is designed
and perfectly suited for touchscreen devices.
Good News for PCs
Even though it seems that it is a hopeless case for
PCs, all is not yet over. Although tablets are taking over the day to day
functions of a desktop computer, there are still a large number of applications
and tasks that require the age-old keyboard and mouse combination to work
properly. These old applications are the only thing that is keeping the PC
market alive at this point of time but it is hard to say how long this will
continue. With the ever increasing amount of innovations taking place all
around the computing market, these applications may eventually be removed or
upgraded into software that suits the touch-input capabilities of a tablet.
In a Nutshell
Market research shows that tablets are eating up the
computing market but the companies dealing with PCs are trying their best to
put up a good fight. Only time can tell whether PCs will become extinct like
the LP records, walkmans, VHS and floppy disks or not. The immensely successful
and lowly Micromax tablet price has proven a point or two
for detractors of the technology.
