Microsoft
was a late comer into the world of smartphones with its Windows 8 platform but
in a short period of time it has become quite popular. Android, from Google, is
an established player in the game and it still going from strength to strength.
These operating systems are licensed to be used by different phone
manufacturers and this is why the competition between these two is increasing.
A
good operating system needs to be smooth in its operation and should not put
pressure on the CPU too much. Thanks to the guidelines put down by Microsoft,
phone manufactures have to create a handset capable of handling the strain of
running Windows. Android is more or less an open software and therefore phone
manufacturers can create whatever type of phone they want to and run Android on
them. This causes a lot of problems as Android may run smoothly on one phone
and crash on a regular basis on another one. This doesn’t mean however that
there aren’t any good Android phones. There are some pretty excellent Android
phones out there capable of surpassing Windows phones.
User Interface
The
user interface of Windows 8 emphasizes on functionality rather than beauty.
This somehow makes the UI rather appealing in its own way but the options for
customization are quite limited. In case of Android, the UI is quite good and
does its job smoothly. Even though Windows UI rates better than Android’s,
there is a multitude of customization capabilities available in the latter.
Tablet Comparison
Android
is at the forefront of mobile operating systems and Android dominates the
tablet market too. Android’s tablet version is similar to that of the mobile
version and Google has ensured that Android apps can function on both the
categories of devices. Windows for tablets is an entirely different game
however. Instead of making Windows 8 run on tablets. Microsoft has created
Windows RT, which in the simplest of terms, is a light version of Windows 8.
This enables the OS to perform better on tablet hardware. The only tablet in
the market that has true Windows 8 is Surface Pro from Microsoft. That said,
Windows RT is a viable option for tablet seekers.
Best Products from both sides
Android,
being an open licensed software, is available on a variety of phones, good and
bad. The best of all these devices is undoubtedly the Samsung Galaxy S4, which
is the latest from Samsung Galaxy S series. It has the latest and best handset
features available in the market, is filled with goodies and runs on the latest
version of Android, i.e. 4.2.2 Jelly Bean OS. A number of other Indian brands
like Micromax android phones provide a similarly high
value for products. Microsoft controls the way the Windows mobiles are built
and this is evident especially in the Nokia Lumia Series, or more specifically,
Nokia Lumia 920. This is possibly the best of the Windows 8 phones and its
features are also drool-worthy and jaw dropping. Additionally, the android mobile price in India has seen a major drop in
prices when compared to its Windows counterpart, which gives it a slight
advantage at the market level.
Apps and App Store
The
Windows mobile app market is severely crippled by the scarcity of apps. The
Google Play Store is on the contrary flooded with apps, good and bad. Windows
is a newly launched OS for mobiles and it is therefore expected that the number
of apps is lower. This will change in the near future. The apps available are,
however, good as they have been checked by Microsoft for errors before being
launched. Android is filled with apps which are inherently tied to the version
of the OS it was launched for. It means that not all Android devices are
capable of running all the Android apps but the huge quantity of apps make up
for that problem.
Overall Conclusion
Both
softwares have their pros and cons. In the end, it all boils down to personal
preference and requirements. Yet, it is worth mentioning that Samsung mobiles has seen a major surge in
sales owing to high quality devices they have continuously churned out over the last few years.
